Magnesium

Magnesium is a macro mineral. This means it is a dietary mineral that is required in relatively large amounts, and it constitutes a large portion of certain body tissues and fluids. Magnesium is essential for the formation of normal skeletal development, as a constituent of bone. It also acts as an enzyme activator, primarily in glycolytic systems. It helps to decrease tissue irritability as well.

Vasodilation, with resulting reduction in blood pressure (manifested outwardly by flushing of the skin), is prevalent when there is a deficient amount of magnesium present. Other deficiency signs include hyperirritability and tetany. Tetany, grass tetany or grass staggers, characterized by loss of appetite (anorexia), hyperemia, convulsions and death.

Magnesium toxicity from feeding has not been demonstrated, however when there is an excess of magnesium, it upsets calcium and phosphorus metabolism.

Good sources of magnesium are magnesium sulfate or oxide. This can be mixed with salt or a small amount of feed.

Deficiencies of magnesium may be encountered with sucking calves and pigs.
